Dick Gregory, z”l, and the Joseph Story

“Knew and Knew Not” — some words about Dick Gregory’s Bible Tales from a thing I wrote in the Before Time, just barely pre-Covid.

Quoted here is the sadly out-of-print book Dick Gregory’s Bible Tales with Commentary. James R. McGraw, editor. NY: Stein and Day, 1974. I am so fond of this book that I am trying to figure out how to get it reprinted.

And for more context, “CRD-1,” mentioned in this document, is the group for whom this Re-Reading Exodus was written, “Cross River Dialogue,” was a small group of white Jews and Black non-Jews, living and working east and west of the Anacostia River in Washington DC. We learned a lot from one another and made lasting friendships but no longer meet or otherwise function as a group.

Also, for clarity, the questions for thought closing this section and the section quoted below, were part of a Counting the Omer project, developed through CRD-1, in 2020.

“Long Predicted Results” — more from Dick Gregory, another excerpt from Rereading Exodus, which originally prompted this blog’s existence.

Image Description: Book cover reading “Dick Gregory’s Bible Tales with Commentary” above a picture of Gregory (c. 1974) wearing a robe, like a monk or a biblical character might wear, and holding a rolled parchment scroll in his left hand. (photograph is of a battered paperback book.)
